Bioinformatics is the application of computer technology to the understanding and effective use of biological and clinical data. It is the discipline that stores, analyses and interprets the 'big data' generated by life science experiments, or collected in a clinical context, using computer science and dedicated data experts. This multidisciplinary field brings together scientists from a variety of backgrounds: biologists, computer scientists, mathematicians, statisticians and physicists (more).
The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics is an academic not-for-profit organization whose mission is to lead and coordinate the field of bioinformatics in Switzerland. Its data science experts join forces to advance biological and medical research and enhance health (more).
As a federation of bioinformatics research and service groups, its Group Leaders are senior academic staff at our partner institutions. The Institute is also piloting several Internal Groups, which are composed of SIB Employees (more).

The SIB Management is located on the ground floor of the Amphipole Building, University of Lausanne (UNIL).
By plane, to Geneva, Basel or Zurich
By train, to Lausanne or Renens (see official website of the Swiss railway company, CFF).
By metro, to Unil-Sorge (see official website of the Lausanne public transports, T-L)
- From Renens railway station: take metro M1 to the "Unil-Sorge" stop.
- From Lausanne railway station: take the metro M2 going to "Les Croisettes" to the "Flon" stop, then the M1 metro going to "Renens CFF". Get off at "UNIL-Sorge".
By car, highway direction Lausanne-Sud, exit "Université-EPFL".
