EPD is a database of experimentally determined transcription initiations sites created by Philipp Bucher. It was distributed for the first time in 1986 on computer-readable media as part of the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Data Library and has been regularly maintained ever since with funding from the SIB starting in 1998. Today, EPD provides comprehensive promoter collections for nine model organisms from animals, plants and fungi.
The goal of this symposium is to bring together researchers from different generations and different backgrounds who have made seminal contributions to our current understanding of promoter function and structure. We expect some historical talks, recapitulating how our views of promoters have evolved since Jacob and Monod, some visionary talks anticipating future directions of the field, and some very timely talks presenting the latest results on trendy topics. Hopefully there will also be some time for discussion and debate on fundamental and controversial issues such as what is a promoter.
